Bespoke Under Stairs Drawers in Melton Mowbray

Dead space under the stairs is one of the most wasted bits of a house. This Melton Mowbray project turned that awkward triangle into full-width drawers: handleless satin white fronts on the outside, oak-effect lined timber on the inside.

What we built

Five drawers in total, following the line of the stringer:

• Two triangular drawers in the tight end
• Three low, full-width drawers for shoes and everyday kit
• Handleless push-to-open fronts with soft-close runners
• Satin white drawer faces and fascia strips
• Oak-effect laminate to the insides

The fronts sit flush, so it reads as panelling rather than a row of cupboard doors. No handles, no snagging in a narrow hallway.

Stepped drawer depths follow the underside of the treads.

Why drawers instead of a cupboard door

A single door under the stairs usually means a dark void and a lot of kneeling. Drawers bring the contents out to you. Each box is a different depth, so the space under the lowest treads still earns its keep.

The runners are heavy-duty undermount, hidden, with a separate push-to-open catch. Soft-close stops them slamming in a hallway.

Materials and finish

• Satin white laminate facias to match the existing stair panelling.
• Oak-effect laminate inside to blend with the internal Oak doors.
• Timber plugs over screw heads, attention to detail
• Push-to-open / soft-close hardware, no handles

All of it made to the opening, not an off-the-shelf carcass forced in.
